Resident Spotlight – Marion Small

Meet CSL Resident, Marion Small!Meet Marion Small, Carlton Senior Living’s spotlight resident – Marion was born in the Central Valley city of Modesto, California in 1924. Her father had many different jobs including driving buses for the local school system. When Marion was about seven years old, she and her family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and settled in Oakland. Soon after, they welcomed her sister, Janet, into the family.

Throughout her life, Marion has been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, and recalls traveling by plane, train and automobile, and seeing many of the museums, architecture, and being immersed in the history there.

Marion’s husband, Arthur C. Small, was a colonel in the United States Army, and was stationed in Germany, where they lived for some time. He spent more than a decade in the armed forces before returning to the United States. In Davis, he was given the post of vice-chancellor for the University of California, under Chancellor Emil Mrak an American food scientist, microbiologist recognized internationally for his work in food preservation and as a world authority on the biology of yeasts.

Marion and Arthur had two children, Dana and Randall. Marion says that she enjoyed taking care of her children, and volunteering her time in numerous organizations. She especially loved hosting parties!

Marion says that a philosophy she lives by is spreading kindness to others. She would like to be remembered as a good mother, and most admires her late husband and his steadfastness. When asked to describe herself, Marion states that she’s tall, smart and fun! She loves the food at the Carlton, especially the coffee and chocolate ice cream, as well as the filet mignon. She also enjoys music from the Rat Pack, and the movie “Gone with the Wind.” Marion feels very fortunate to spend time with her family and her close friends here at the Carlton Senior Living Davis.
