According to the World Health Organization, one of the leading causes of death for men and women over the age of 65 includes the injuries sustained from falls. The best way to avoid falls is to maintain balance and muscle mass, which makes it important to remain active throughout the year. It is also a good idea to have soles that are made of slip-resistant materials. Finally, if you can, avoid ice and snow altogether as much as possible during the winter months.

Winter Tip #2 – Avoiding wintertime depression

In order to get away from the uncomfortable temperatures in the winter, many seniors make sure that they stay indoors throughout these cold months. The truth is that this might be safe as far as temperature is concerned, but it can lead to serious isolation. This in turn may lead to seasonal affective disorder. This is ultimately going to have a negative impact on the senior’s quality of life.

Winter Tip #3 – Make sure that you dress warm

According to the figures from the CDC, more than 50 percent of all the deaths attributed to hypothermia were with people over the age of 65. It is important to wear warm socks and ensure that the indoor temperature does not become too low. When going outside, it is also a good idea to wear a scarf, gloves, and a heavy coat. If you do have to be outside during very cold temperatures, it is a good idea that all exposed skin is covered up.

Winter Tip #4 – Be aware of the flu season

It can be exceedingly dangerous to get the flu for people who are over the age of 65. Even the healthiest senior would do well to prevent these problems as much as possible. This is why a flu shot might be a good idea for those over the age of 65. Especially because seniors have a weaker immune system than younger adults do.
