Resident Spotlight: Doris Miller

Miracles never cease!

Many years ago in 1936, 12 of us girls bonded together and became the Fidelis Club at University High School in Oakland. Incidentally we were all the same age that year. Our purpose was to provide special services to our community, but it turned out out that we too were recipients: of lasting friendship, loyalty and fidelity over our lifetime. During World War II we were scattered near and far, but we continued to remain connected and in touch with one another. Our families grew with children and we enjoyed our picnics and dance parties at the Claremont Hotel together. We traveled by the San Francisco Ferry, arriving in our hand sewn formals at the St Francis Hotel for only a $2.50 cover charge and danced to the music of outstanding orchestras!

Our last luncheon was held on our accumulated 80th birthdays. And so another event has brought Arnie and Jo Banta to live here at the Carlton Downtown Pleasant Hill Community. Their son Ralph knew of my living here and came to visit in contemplation of relocating closer to his home. So now my two classmates are comfortable in their new apartment and again close by to me. Incidentally, we are still seven members strong at the age of 96!
