National Banana Split Day (yes, there really IS such a thing) is Tuesday, August 25 and Carlton Senior Living of Davis is celebrating with a free banana split party featuring signature house-made toppings created by the community’s chef, Andrew Moret. The event starts at 5 p.m.
The banana split, originally invented by an apprentice pharmacist in Pennsylvania in 1904, has seen countless variations of ice cream and toppings. The traditional banana split consists of one scoop each of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream placed between the split sides of the banana with pineapple, strawberry and chocolate sauces as well as whipped cream, nuts and a maraschino cherry on top.
Moret, the senior living community’s lead chef who trained at the Culinary Institute of America, the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine in China and Ideas in Food in San Francisco, will prepare a variety of house-made toppings including signature sauces. Guests can include whipped cream; chocolate, caramel and strawberry sauce; toasted coconut and peanuts; peanut butter sauce; pineapple; sprinkles; crushed Oreos and Cap’n Crunch; and miniature chocolate chips.
“This will be a great opportunity for our residents and neighbors to get together, beat the heat and celebrate National Banana Split Day,” said Stephen Kennery, senior vice president of professional services for Carlton Senior Living and a veteran of the foodservice and hospitality industries.
