We know that seniors are not immune to gambling, which led to us wanting to know a bit more about seniors and gambling addiction. It should not come as no surprise that seniors might struggle with gambling addiction, because casinos have been spending the last two decades inviting senior gamblers over to them.
These casinos offer an environment that people with a disability can easily navigate, offer free transportation, and even give personalized discounts. There are many casinos that want to make it as enticing as possible for seniors to play there.
Especially because some seniors might be bored with the traditional ‘day to day’, they might look elsewhere for some entertainment. Perhaps they want to win the ‘big one’ to supplement the already meager retirement savings that they have. There are a number of different things that you can ask yourself to determine whether someone might struggle with a gambling issue.
Ask Yourself These Questions
Despite the fact that gambling addiction is hard to recognize, there are a few questions that you can ask yourself:
- Are there other poor decision making skills?
- Are they receiving calls about past due utilitiesor other bills?
- Are you noticing that the cupboard or refrigeratoris emptier than you have come to expect?
- Is there a decrease in self-care or hygiene
- Have they dropped recreational activities or other hobbies?
- Are they asking for money? Lost their wallet? Asking for loans?
Perhaps you are unwilling to have this discussion with your loved one, and your loved one might not want to talk about this with you. They might be worried that they lose their independence, lose the respect of others, or are simply embarrassed about the fact that they cannot control their gambling.
It is important to remember that gambling is an even more serious issue for seniors than for younger people, primarily because seniors do not have the same amount of time to rebuild a lost retirement fund. Gambling away money that should go to living expenses or medical bills can lead to serious health issues.
When dealing with gambling, it is often important to get to the underlying root cause of why someone is gambling. Is this because they are bored? Addicted? Regardless of what the reason might be, it is beneficial to have people around your loved one to ensure that everything is going as it should. If you believe that your loved one has a gambling issue, do not be afraid to ask for help.
