Grandchildren might feel a bit intimidated at the setting found in an assisted living community. However, it is possible to make them feel right at home with a number of different items and activities. These are a few of our favorite examples.
Tip #1 – Play A Card Game
This can literally be any card game (provided that it is not too difficult for children to play or understand). If you want to spend a few hours playing, you only need a deck of cards and a flat surface. With so many different options available, a lack of options is never the problem.
Tip #2 – Look Through Family Photo Albums
Despite the fact that most of our memories are now stored digitally, there is something magical about using the traditional photo album. Children of all ages (and we do mean all ages) enjoy seeing their parents when they were growing up. This is also a great time to teach kids a bit more about what life was like decades ago.
Tips #3 – Have A Simple Talent Show
Grandchildren love showing off their skill, whether it be singing a song, telling a joke, doing cartwheels, or doing something else. This is a great way to learn a bit more about your grandchildren and can also provide you with some great gift ideas for the next holiday season/birthday.
Tip #4 – Treasure Hunt
Who does not like a simple scavenger hunt? You can have this type of event in a number of different ways, and you can adapt it to your current space. Make sure that you hide clues around the living area or social areas. You can have riddles or rhymes, all ending with a small prize. This is a great way to make kids feel comfortable without forcing them to explore the area.
Tip #5 – Read A Chapter Book
If you have a good book, you might have a cliffhanger with every chapter that you read together. Each time that you are together with your grandkids, you can read them a few chapters. This gives your grandchildren a chance to show you the books that are popular today or show them the books that you loved as a child.
These are just a few of the different options that we have seen work before. Of course there are always other options that can keep grandchildren entertained. Find out more about the different housing options found at www.carltonseniorliving.com and learn what you can do there.
