Eat To Keep Your Brain Healthy

human-brain-healthEven though eating healthy foods are important for people of all ages, it becomes especially important as we get on in age. If we want to benefit our brain later in life, these are just a selection of three different foods that can have a positive effect.

Food #1 – Taking In Plenty Of Fish

Especially eating moderate portions of oily fish can help keep our brain in great condition. It is also important that we opt for low-fat versions of fish. A selection of the best oily fish includes pilchards, kippers, sardines, mackerel, salmon, herring, and trout.

These provide our body with essential fatty acids, which our body is unable to produce on its own. This means that in order to have enough of these essential fatty acids, we need to consume them in our diet. The most effective omega-3 oils include DHA and EPA, which are plentiful in fish. Lower DHA levels have been linked to a higher risk of developing memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Not only are these omega-3 oils beneficial to the brain, but the heart and joints as well.

Food #2 – Tomatoes And Blueberries

It is recommended that we eat at least five portions of vegetables and fruits each day. Even though all different fruits and vegetables contain a number of great properties, studies have shown that tomatoes are great when it comes to keeping your brain in the best possible shape.

Studies have shown that tomatoes are filled with lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body prevents damage from free radicals. These free radicals are believed to play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. According to additional studies, blueberries may also play an important role in improving short-term memory loss or at the very least delaying it.

Food #3 – Whole Grains

Whole grains in our diet will help keep us energized and healthy. Wheat bran, granary bread, and brown rice all add glucose to the bloodstream. This allows us to focus better, and makes the release of glucose into your bloodstream more efficient. Rather than having to deal with short-term spikes of mental alertness (which is what we experience with traditional sugars), whole grains allow us to be mentally alert throughout the day.
