They say if you love what you do, you never truly work a day. For James Nickerson, Carlton Senior Living in Elk Grove gave him the opportunity to do a job he truly loves.
Nickerson is known around the community for joking with his coworkers and residents in the hallways. But back in October 2014, he was in a much different place.
Nickerson had worked at the same company for seven years, but he wanted to find an employer that would allow him to gain more experience and grow in his career field. He knew almost nothing about Carlton Senior Living when he came across a job bulletin online and applied. Two days later, he was called in for an interview.
“The first time I visited the community, I was amazed,” Nickerson said. “I couldn’t believe a place like it existed. It was beautiful like a resort, and it was unlike any other senior living community I had seen before.”
Nickerson was hired as a Medication Supervisor the same day. His job consisted of making sure prescriptions for residents were taken each day and ensuring physician’s orders were followed. After five months, he approached his supervisors and asked if he could take on more responsibility.
“They took a look at my performance and decided to promote me to Medication Manager,” Nickerson said. “It felt good to know that my hard work was appreciated and rewarded.”
Nickerson said he hopes to continue growing in his career and work his way up to Executive Director in the future. “That’s what I love about Carlton Senior Living,” Nickerson said. “We don’t just take care of the residents, we take care of the employees, too.”
