Elvie Johnson smiles whenever she talks about working at Carlton Senior Living. As one of the first employees to be hired at the Downtown Pleasant Hill community 19 years ago, Johnson has countless memories of coming to work each day and being welcomed by her coworkers and residents. It’s a trend that continued from her very first day.
“I was working with a different company in Walnut Creek and a friend told me about a new assisted living community that had opened,” Johnson said. “The building was still under construction, but I decided to go by there and see if they were hiring. The executive director invited me in and gave me an interview right then. I was hired on the spot.”
Johnson began her career with Carlton Senior Living as a caregiver, taking care of residents who had early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Though the work was challenging, Johnson said she instantly fell in love with the community.
“The part of working here that I like the most is being with the residents,” Johnson said. “I have always felt like I was part of a family, and I love making residents feel like they are part of our family, too.”
A year later, she was promoted to the medication manager position. Johnson said she was happy to be given the opportunity to move up in the company. She remained in that position for a few more years before becoming the director of resident services at Poet’s Corner. In 2010, Johnson transferred to the Pleasant Hill community and continues to work there today.
“I love working here, and this job is like a second home to me,” Johnson said. “The company is amazing and they treat their employees very well. I love my coworkers and being with the residents. That’s what has kept me here all these years.”
